Principles of assessment about Assessment of personality disorders
It is important that the assessor look at interpersonal style, affect and behavioural facets using a multitude of assessment methods, and over time. No diagnostic procedure, regardless of type should be measured against a standard of absolute accuracy due to the errors within all. Absolute labels of personality disorder, including psychopathy, are not always entirely useful. They can act as a barrier for therapeutic approaches under a banner of ‘nothing works’. It is, however, clinically relevant and beneficial to identify particular traits and personality difficulties that may hinder treatment approaches. This in turn will enable both the individual patient and professional to navigate an effective route for functioning to an optimum degree within society.
