Biological interventions for dementia
In dementia there is progressive loss of brain cells. This process is currently
irreversible. However, there are medicines that can slow the process.
Vitamin E, Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), non-steroid anti-inflammatory
medication and a low dose of aspirin may all help to slow down
dementia. Cholinesterase inhibitors (brand names: Aricept, Exelon and
Reminyl) are a group of drugs that are used currently in the general population.
It is also advised that being more mentally active can be a protective
mechanism.
