Dependence about personality disorder
This can often be heard as an excuse used to avoid offering help to people with personality disorder. Some health care professionals may fear offering services in case it promotes dependence. While dependence can be a genuine problem at times, it is a necessary part of the healing process. Dependence can best be viewed as a stage between total chaos and independence. Without going through a period of dependency, the person with personality disorder may never become truly independent. The role of the mental health professional is to be dependable and consistent in their support and acceptance of their clients. People with these disorders often suffer from a variety of symptoms common in other mental illnesses. They can have another illness alongside their personality disorder. However, more commonly, they may experience several symptoms from a variety of illnesses. This often leads to a number of misdiagnoses before they are eventually diagnosed with personality disorder.
