Disorders of non-attachment

Disorders of non-attachment In these disorders the infant has not developed a clear preference for a specific attachment figure. This may occur in situations where infants have been seriously neglected or had multiple changes or carers. Two types of nonattachment are described: 1 With emotional withdrawal—In this situation the infant is emotionally withdrawn and unreactive and avoids social interaction or comfort-seeking. 2 With indiscriminate sociability—These infants seek interaction and comfort from available adults, including strangers, and show no preference for any particular figure. They may protest when separated from a stranger and be inappropriately close and show comfort-seeking behaviours. These behaviours have been observed in groups of institutionalised children
