Epidemiology of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD)
Epidemiology
Epidemiology is the study of patterns and correlates of disease onset and course in human populations. Psychiatric epidemiology includes studies of the prevalence of psychiatric disorders (i.e, how many people have specific disorders), the distribution of disorders among subgroups of populations, the relationship of a particular disorder to other disorders, and factors that affect the onset and course of a disorder. In the following sections, we review findings addressing (1) the frequency of exposure to potentially traumatic events, (2) the prevalence of PTSD, (3) putative risk factors for PTSD, and (4) the comorbidity of PTSD with other mental and physical health problems.
