How does dementia affect the family?
The elderly are treated with respect and love in most families. When an elderly person starts behaving in an unusual manner, it causes the family a great deal of distress. The person may forget who his closest relatives are. Aggressive behaviour, agitation and confusion, and sexually inappropriate behaviour cause great difficulty to carers. As the disease gets worse, the sufferer gradually loses the ability to care for himself. Soon, all daily activities such as feeding, bathing,
dressing and toileting have to be done with help from the carers. In the final stages of the illness, the elderly person is completely bedridden and needs constant care. You can well imagine how profound the impact of the illness can be, given that dementia can last five to ten years.
