Psychiatric rehabilitation provides the theoretical underpinnings in a number of interventions in which mothers living with mental illnesses are receiving services in the USA. “Psychiatric rehabilitation promotes recovery, full community integration, and improved quality of life” for individuals whose mental illnesses impair their functioning, through services that are collaborative, person directed, and individualized to promote skill development and access to resources
(uspra.ipower.com/Certification/USPRA_CORE_ PRINCIPLES2009.pdf). Emphasis in psychiatric rehabilitation is placed on improving functioning in the roles and domains set as priorities by individuals. Optimal functioning is achieved through a process of identifying strengths and resources, setting relevant and meaningful goals,
learning and practicing new skills, receiving appropriate feedback, and refining goals as progress is made. Practitioners, family members, or friends may facilitate a mother’s access to formal and informal environmental resources and supports. A woman who is functioning optimally in a role she prioritizes is likely to feel better, and feeling better is likely to contribute to improved functioning.
