• Sleeping problems are very common. Insomnia is a health problem if it has been present for at least
two weeks and is causing difficulties.
• Depression, alcohol misuse, excessive use of sleeping medicines and painful physical illnesses can
cause insomnia.
• Simple changes in lifestyle are the best way of restoring healthy sleep. If you do prescribe sleeping
pills, never do so for more than four weeks at a time.
• If insomnia is part of another illness, for example depression, treat that illness.
