• Postnatal depression is a common condition. It is commoner in mothers whose marriages are unhappy or who have had a difficult delivery.
• Because mothers are expected to be happy and involved in baby care, they are less likely to share negative feelings and emotions with others.
• The majority of mothers can be helped by counselling and
antidepressant medicines.
• Postnatal psychosis is best treated in a specialist unit;
if this is not available, treat the mother with antipsychotic medicines
and ensure that she is assisted in the baby’s care by relatives.
