what happens in cognitive behavioural therapy?
WHAT HAPPENS IN COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY? During the sessions the therapist will help the person to identify negative or irrational thoughts or thinking patterns (cognitive) and unhelpful patterns of acting (behavioural). For example the irrational fears of a person who suffers from agoraphobia (fear of open spaces) might cause them to stay at home all the time (unwanted behaviour), which can have tremendous consequences on the person’s quality of life. The therapeutic process depends on the collaboration between the therapist and the client. This is done during individual therapy sessions and then practised at home. Usually it lasts for between 6 and 20 individual sessions.
