Why is ADHD an important problem?
Most children with ADHD are not recognised as suffering from an illness. Instead, they are labelled as being naughty and irresponsible. This makes them feel guilty and unhappy. They are denied proper treatment and, as a result do badly. Some children continue to have
problems in adjusting to life even when they grow up. Some may develop conduct problems during their teenage years and start using drugs or alcohol. Later on, some become involved in antisocial activities. Recognising this illness can help parents and teachers understand why the child is behaving in this manner. Knowing what is wrong can help in providing effective treatments.
